RE: Purchase Order Increase for Covetrus North America
recommendation
BOARD ACTION REQUESTED:
Please accept this Memorandum as a formal request for Animal Control to increase the current purchase order (PO 23-04898) of $55,000.00 to the amount of $110,000.00.
BACKGROUND:
Covetrus North America supplies surgical, medical, and pharmaceutical needs to aid in the health and welfare of the owner surrendered and stray animals taken in from the community. The increased cases of illness and surgical needs have exhausted the previously requested amount.
DISCUSSION:
Genesee County Animal Control served 3,251 animals last year. To date we have served 2,053. We are just over halfway through the fiscal year and have exhausted the previously requested funds. The cost of inflation has increased fees for required items to provide for the health and welfare of the animals. With a fulltime Veterinarian on staff our costs to other medical resources have decreased leaving the surgical and medical needs to our shelter population to increase. Dr. McCormick not only serves the animal population taken in with many ailments and surgical needs she also decreases the community at-large population with the Trap, Neuter, and Release (TNR) program, which has serviced this year alone 277 cats versus the 237 cats that came through our program last year. She also has spay/neutered 875 adoptable animals to date.
