RE: Approval to create, post & fill one (1) Civil Engineer position
recommendation
BOARD ACTION REQUESTED:
The Drain Commissioner's Office is respectfully requesting approval to creation, post & fill one (1) Civil Engineer position. Source of funding is 1010-442.00-702.000
BACKGROUND:
To improve our ability to serve the public we would ask the Board approval to establish and fill a second Civil Engineer position. For many years our Office has done its best to keep up with the workload. Technology has helped in the past with automating what can be. Currently there is more work than can be done by the current staff.
DISCUSSION:
Our Office maintains over 1200 active County Drains, responding to new petitions for new drains or improvements to existing drains, is responsible for 9 legal lake levels, and is keeping the County in compliance with the NPDES phase II stormwater permit as the County Agent. Staff work directly with the Community to make the storm sewers safer, alleviate flooding, control lake levels and promote environmental stewardship related to storm water. Due to increased development and petition requests, an additional staff person is needed. Evaluating the best use of staff, a second Civil Engineer would be the most valuable.
IMPACT ON HUMAN RESOURCES:
Establish the position and related paperwork.
IMPACT ON BUDGET:
Fiscal year 2023-24 there is money in the budget to cover this position, but we are seeking a budget amendment for Fiscal Year 2024-25 from fund 1010-442.00-702.000 to add the costs for the additional Engineer not to exceed $103,074 which is the top pay step.
IMPACT ON FACILITIES:
no impact on facilities
IMPACT ON TECHNOLOGY:
1 computer and 1 phone would be needed
CONFORMITY TO COUNTY PRIORITIES:
Timely and effective service to the community will improve health, and safety.
