TO THE HONORABLE CHAIRPERSON AND MEMBERS OF THE GENESEE COUNTY BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS, GENESEE COUNTY, MICHIGAN

LADIES AND GENTLEMEN:

WHEREAS, Fire Prevention Week is the longest-running public health and safety observance in the United States, established to commemorate the Great Chicago Fire of 1871 and emphasize the importance of preventing and preparing for fires; and
WHEREAS, the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) has designated Sunday, October 5, 2025, through Saturday, October 11, 2025, as Fire Prevention Week, with communities nationwide observing this week to promote life-saving fire safety education; and
WHEREAS, Genesee County’s fire departments collectively respond to thousands of emergency incidents each year, with Flint Township alone reporting 1,361 incidents in 2023, averaging over 113 per month and more than 3 per day, reflecting the heavy and constant demand placed on local fire services; and
WHEREAS, such incidents endanger residents, damage property, threaten firefighter safety, and consume valuable public safety resources, underscoring the urgent need for proactive prevention efforts; and
WHEREAS, local fire agencies work tirelessly to protect the public through inspections, school-based education, safety drills, and programs like Flint’s “Project Get Alarmed,” which provides free smoke detectors to residents; and
WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper for Genesee County to join communities across the nation in recognizing Fire Prevention Week to raise awareness, honor the dedication of first responders, and encourage the adoption of fire-safe practices.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that this Board of County Commissioners of Genesee County, Michigan, hereby proclaims October 5-11, 2025 as Fire Prevention Week in Genesee County, Michigan, and calls upon all residents to participate in fire safety education and prevention activities during this week and throughout the year.
