RE: Memorandum of Understanding for GCHD to provide WIC services at Hurley MC Children’s Center

recommendation

BOARD ACTION REQUESTED:
Approval for a Memorandum of Understanding between Genesee County Health Department (GCHD) Women, Infants and Children (WIC) program and Hurley Medical Center (HMC) to provide WIC services at HMC Children’s Center.

BACKGROUND:
GCHD WIC and HMC have collaborated since February 1, 2017, to enroll infants and children into the Supplemental Food and Nutrition Program, WIC, that provides healthy food, nutrition counseling, breastfeeding education, and community referrals to qualified residents. Due to COVID restrictions, this collaboration was no longer possible, and the MOU expired.

DISCUSSION:
Both GCHD and HMC would like to reestablish this partnership as it increases accessibility for families to WIC services and fosters the relationship between the agencies. WIC is a proven public health program that improves the health and nutrition of pregnant women, new mothers, infants, and young children, promoting healthier birth outcomes and long-term well-being.

IMPACT ON HUMAN RESOURCES:
Existing staff will be used so there is no impact on Human Resources.

IMPACT ON BUDGET:
Three is no financial compensation included in this agreement so there is no impact on the budget.

IMPACT ON FACILITIES:
Hurley Medical Center will allow WIC staff to use an office in the Children’s Clinic so there is no impact on facilities.

IMPACT ON TECHNOLOGY:
WIC staff will use existing equipment so there is no impact on technology.

CONFORMITY TO COUNTY PRIORITIES:
A partnership between GCHD and HMC to offer WIC services promotes a collaborative culture that improves accessibility to public health programs and makes a positive impact on Genesee County. WIC safeguards the health and well-being of families by providing nutritious food, education, and support for a healthier community.
