BOARD ACTION REQUESTED:
Approve a pay increase for the Genesee County Board of Canvassers
BACKGROUND:
County Board of Canvassers are a required part of the Michigan Election Process. Each Canvasser is appointed to a 4-year staggered term by the Genesee County Board of Commissioners. The Board of Canvassers is required to be composed of 2 Democrats and 2 Republicans. The Duties of the County Board of canvassers is to certify the results of each election.
DISCUSSION:
Currently, our canvassers are paid at a rate of $70 per day for their duties. This rate of pay has not been increased in quite some time, and we have found that we are one of the lowest in the state. We are asking that the rate of pay for canvassers be raised to $100 per day for their work. Canvassers have 14 days from the election to certify the election. So, at most they would be paid for 14 days. During presidential elections they tend to work all 14 days, while smaller elections they often only work a handful of days.
IMPACT ON HUMAN RESOURCES:
No Impact on the budget
IMPACT ON BUDGET:
This small increase is already accounted for in the Clerks Elections budget and would require no additional general fund dollars. For all 4 canvassers for the November General elections this would be an estimated increase to a total of $1,620. The increase would be coming from 1010-215.00-702.000.

CONFORMITY TO COUNTY PRIORITIES:
By increasing the daily rate for our hard working canvassers we are indeed supporting all 4 of our county priorities, raising wages of Genesee county Residents (Community Growth), creating a more inclusive culture by compensating at a rate that makes individuals able to afford to be in this very temporary role, It does not affect our budget and thus supports financial stability.

TO THE HONORABLE CHAIRPERSON AND MEMBERS OF THE GENESEE COUNTY BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS, GENESEE COUNTY, MICHIGAN
LADIES AND GENTLEMEN:
BE IT RESOLVED, by this Board of County Commissioners of Genesee County, Michigan, that the request by the Clerk/Register to authorize increasing the rate of pay for each member of the Genesee County Board of County Canvassers from $70.00 per day to $100.00 per day and $50.00 per half day of service, to be paid from account 1010-215.00-702.000, is approved (a copy of the memorandum request and supporting documents being on file with the official records of the October 16, 2024 meeting of the Governmental Operations Committee of this Board).
