BOARD ACTION REQUESTED:
Authorization to accept a onetime grant from the Byrne Discretionary Community Project in the amount of $1,405,391.00.
BACKGROUND:
This is a federal grant administered by the Michigan State Police (MSP). MSP will provide subawards to nine local law enforcement agencies (Genesee County Sheriff’s Office, Saginaw Police Department, City of Linden Police Department, Mt. Morris Township Police Department, City of Fenton Police Department, City of Flint Police Department, Genesee Township Police Department, Bay County Sheriff’s Office) across Michigan, as well as the MSP. The MSP will assist to meet the unique needs of Michigan Law enforcement entities by delivering the federal funding for equipment purchasing and technology upgrades including associated training. Some of these critical upgrades are to improve equipment, technology, patrol vehicles, to ensure the enduring efficacy of Michigan’s law enforcement. The Genesee County Sheriff’s Office will undertake a comprehensive equipment upgrade with these funds, which would be used for 3 police pursuit vehicles, a dive-team boat, a speed sign trailer, metal detectors, portable radios, and tasers, among other necessary equipment purchases. This equipment would increase officer safety and enhance their ability of law enforcement to serve their communities.

Attached is the budget amendment there is no general fund money that will be used. All purchases will adhere to the counties purchasing policy.

TO THE HONORABLE CHAIRPERSON AND MEMBERS OF THE GENESEE COUNTY BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS, GENESEE COUNTY, MICHIGAN
LADIES AND GENTLEMEN:
BE IT RESOLVED, by this Board of County Commissioners of Genesee County, Michigan, that the request by Genesee County Sheriff Christopher R. Swanson to enter into an agreement with the Michigan State Police and accept the Byrne Discretionary Community Project in the amount of $1,405,391.00 is approved (a copy of the memorandum request and supporting documentation being on file with the official records of the October 11, 2023 meeting of the Governmental Operations Committee of this Board) and the Chief Financial Officer is authorized to record the attached budget amendment.
