BOARD ACTION REQUESTED:
Approval to host a Military and Veterans Gala for Genesee County Veterans/Currently Serving Members in November 2026
BACKGROUND:
Military Balls are formal, tradition rich galas dating back to the late 19th century-with roots in George Washington’s era-designed to boost morale, honor service heritage, and foster camaraderie. Key traditions include the POW/MIA table ceremony, receiving line, sword arch, and formal toasts. With America 250 being this year, this is a perfect way to honor veterans in Genesee County.
DISCUSSION:
On Veterans Day, many businesses offer free meals to veterans. While these gestures are appreciated, we believe there is an opportunity to create an even more meaningful way to honor our veterans. Veterans should be celebrated and respected for their service and dedication to our country. The idea for the Genesee County Military and Veterans Gala, was born from the desire to provide a platform for businesses to genuinely engage with and support the veteran community. We believe that by coming together, we can offer veterans a truly memorable and honorable experience.

IMPACT ON BUDGET:
We have funds budgeted under 2930-689.00-900.005 Community Relations. However, we would invite businesses that supports veterans to join us in raising funds for the event. The vision is for the Veterans Gala to be the 'Oscars' of the veteran community, an event so significant that it is televised and presented to the civilian population. Companies and other entities can donate to receive sponsorship opportunities, such as their logos displayed on a 'Red Carpet' affair. Additionally, larger companies can donate for table reservations, allowing them to send their veteran employees to this incredible gala. We would also partner with other Veteran Serving Organizations throughout the county, such as VFWs and American Legions. We are currently exploring venues such as the Riverfront Banquet Center to host.

CONFORMITY TO COUNTY PRIORITIES:
Inclusive, Collaborative Culture: Genesee County Department of Veterans Services wants to continue our role as a convener for all veteran serving organizations and businesses who have an interest in taking care of our veterans. This would also provide a means of expanding communications with residents and local partners.

TO THE HONORABLE CHAIRPERSON AND MEMBERS OF THE GENESEE COUNTY BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS, GENESEE COUNTY, MICHIGAN
LADIES AND GENTLEMEN:
WHEREAS, Genesee County recognizes the service, sacrifice, and dedication of members of the United States Armed Forces, veterans, and their families; and
WHEREAS, the Genesee County Military and Veterans Gala provides an opportunity to formally honor active-duty service members, veterans, reservists, National Guard members, and military families within Genesee County; and
WHEREAS, such an event promotes civic pride, community unity, and public recognition of military service and patriotism; and
WHEREAS, the proposed Genesee County Military and Veterans Gala is intended to be held on or about Veterans Day 2026, and organized by the Genesee County Department of Veterans Services in coordination with community partners; and
WHEREAS, the event may include ceremonial activities, guest speakers, recognition of veterans, and other appropriate observances consistent with the purpose of honoring military service; and
WHEREAS, the County Commissioners find that supporting this event serves a valid public purpose and reflects the County’s commitment to honoring those who have served.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, by this Board of County Commissioners of Genesee County, Michigan, that:
1. Genesee County hereby approves and supports the hosting of a Military and Veterans Ball as described above.
2. That the appropriate County departments and officials are authorized to provide reasonable assistance, coordination, and support as permitted by law and County policy.
3. That this resolution shall take effect immediately upon its adoption.
