Approval of resolution recognizing June 2026 as Pride Month in Genesee County

BACKGROUND:
At their April 2026 meeting, the Genesee County’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Commission approved the attached resolution recognizing March 2026 as Pride Month.

DISCUSSION:
Members of the Genesee County Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Commission met with community members to co-curate this resolution being proposed to the Genesee County Board of Commissioners

TO THE HONORABLE CHAIRPERSON AND MEMBERS OF THE GENESEE COUNTY BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS, GENESEE COUNTY, MICHIGAN

LADIES AND GENTLEMEN:

WHEREAS, this Board of County Commissioners of Genesee County, Michigan, is dedicated to promoting the health, safety, welfare, and inclusion of all residents of Genesee County; and

WHEREAS, Genesee County is enriched by the diversity of its residents, and inclusive communities contribute to social cohesion, civic participation, and economic vitality; and

WHEREAS, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and other sexual and gender minority (LGBTQ+) individuals are valued members of the Genesee County community and have made significant contributions to local government, business, education, nonprofit service, arts, and culture; and

WHEREAS, the month of June is nationally recognized as Pride Month, having been first recognized federally with a presidential proclamation in 1999, and commemorating the 1969 Stonewall Uprising and honoring the ongoing struggle for civil rights, equality, and dignity for LGBTQ+ individuals; and

WHEREAS, Genesee County is home to community-led efforts that celebrate, support, and advocate for LGBTQ+ residents, including the annual Fenton Pride Fest, which will be held on June 20, and the Flint Pride Festival, which will be held on July 18, both of which serve as visible expressions of celebration, education, and unity in our community; and

WHEREAS, the Genesee County Equality Caucus works to advance fairness, representation, and policy awareness for marginalized communities, including LGBTQ+ residents, through civic engagement and advocacy; and

WHEREAS, employee resource groups established by local businesses, nonprofit organizations, and public institutions provide inclusive spaces that foster belonging, professional development, and mutual support for LGBTQ+ employees and allies throughout Genesee County; and

WHEREAS, despite progress toward equality, many LGBTQ+ individuals continue to experience discrimination and disparities, underscoring the importance of continued education, visibility, and institutional support; and

WHEREAS, the Genesee County Board of Commissioners affirms that all individuals deserve to live and work in an environment free from discrimination, harassment, and prejudice, regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender expression.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that this Board of County Commissioners of Genesee County, Michigan, does hereby proclaim June 2026 as Pride Month in Genesee County, Michigan.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that this Board recognizes and commends the efforts of local organizations, initiatives, businesses, nonprofits, and community members who support LGBTQ+ inclusion, including those who organize and participate in the Fenton Pride Fest, Flint Pride Festival, the Genesee County Equality Caucus, and employee resource groups across the county.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that residents, institutions, businesses, and community partners are encouraged to observe Pride Month through programs, events, and educational opportunities that promote understanding, respect, and inclusion.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Genesee County Clerk/Register is directed to provide one copy of this Resolution to each city, village, and township within Genesee County and to each County Clerk in the State of Michigan.
