BOARD ACTION REQUESTED:
Genesee County Parks and Recreation staff requests the approval of an expense to Missouri Tie, LLC for the purchase of 326 railroad ties for Huckleberry Railroad, in an amount not to exceed $18,949.00, for a total amount not to exceed $37,898.00 with the vendor for FYE 2024.
BACKGROUND:
Parks staff has a developed tie replacement program for the Huckleberry Railroad to ensure the safety and operation of the locomotives as well as safety of the park patrons and staff.
Parks purchased one load of ties in October 2023. Staff has completed replacement of the previous order and is prepared to replace another section of track this year - 326 - 6”x8”x6’6” railroad ties, bringing the total expenses with the vendor over $30,000 for FYE 2024.
DISCUSSION:
Sole Source: Missouri Tie, LLC is the only company that will make 6”x8”x6’6” railroad ties. Huckleberry Railroad has a narrow-gauge track.

The Huckleberry Railroad tie replacement program aligns with the priorities of the County, providing safe and reliable services to the community and to our staff. Continuing this program will ensure the stability of the revenue generating facility. Huckleberry Railroad is a huge draw to Crossroads Village.

LADIES AND GENTLEMEN:
BE IT RESOLVED, by this Board of County Commissioners of Genesee County, Michigan, that the request by the Parks and Recreation Director to authorize an expenditure and Purchase Order to Missouri Tie, LLC, in a total amount not to exceed $18,949.00, for the purchase of 326 railroad ties meeting the specifications of the Huckleberry Railroad narrow gauge track, to be paid from account 5080-770.03-864.005, is approved (a copy of the memorandum request being on file with the official records of the August 14, 2024 meeting of the Public Works Committee of this Board).
