BOARD ACTION REQUESTED:
Genesee County Parks and Recreation staff requests the approval to apply for a grant from the Michigan Department of Natural Resources Recreation Passport Grant Program for the development of sports fields at Berston Park. Grant Amount Requested: Up to $150,000.00.
BACKGROUND:
This project is in support of the Berston Fieldhouse - Facility Master Plan, developing football/soccer/lacrosse fields.
Genesee County Parks and Recreation Commission has a Parks Partnership Agreement with the City of Flint that allows the Parks Commission to apply for grants for Berston and serve as fiduciary. This grant opportunity falls within the mission and core values of the Genesee County Parks and Recreation Commission.
DISCUSSION:
This grant requires a 26% match from the Friends of Berston and local sources.

TO THE HONORABLE CHAIRPERSON AND MEMBERS OF THE GENESEE COUNTY BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS, GENESEE COUNTY, MICHIGAN
LADIES AND GENTLEMEN:
WHEREAS, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources Recreation Passport Grant Program is accepting grant applications; and
WHEREAS, grant funds could provide park improvements including the development of football/soccer/lacrosse fields for improved access and recreational opportunities within Berston Fieldhouse; and
WHEREAS, Genesee County, as the grant recipient/applicant, would be required to commit a local match from resources to support any confirmed grant funds, with a twenty-six (26%) match requirement, totaling up to $53,000.00, to be funded by the Friends of Berston and local sources.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, by this Board of County Commissioners of Genesee County, Michigan, that the request by the Parks and Recreation Director to authorize submitting an application to the Michigan Department of Natural Resources Recreation Passport Grant Program for a grant in an amount up to $150,000.00, to fund park improvements and improved recreational opportunities at Berston Fieldhouse, is approved (a copy of the memorandum request being on file with the official records of the March 6, 2024 meeting of the Finance Committee of this Board).
