BOARD ACTION REQUESTED:
Adopt the draft Privacy Policy and Terms of Use
BACKGROUND:
Genesee County does not have a web privacy policy. This policy ensures transparency, protect user information, and clarifies usage rights and responsibilities. These policies foster trust, ensure legal compliance, and protect both Genesee County and its users. These policies are often found as links at the bottom of a website.
DISCUSSION:
This is a best practice. Genesee County needs a website privacy and terms of use policy to be transparent about data collection, protect user information, and clarify acceptable use, building trust with the public. These policies help us comply with data privacy laws, outline security measures, limit liability, and safeguard intellectual property rights, ensuring users understand their rights and responsibilities.
This is also a requirement by the cell phone carriers in order to use SMS (text) messaging. We will not be able to utilize our new SMS messaging tool without this policy linked in our website.

LADIES AND GENTLEMEN:
BE IT RESOLVED, that this Board of County Commissioners of Genesee County, Michigan, hereby approves and adopts the Website Terms of Use and Privacy Policy (a copy of the memorandum request and policy being on file with the official records of the November 13, 2024 meeting of the Governmental Operations Committee of this Board).
