RE: Memorandum of Understanding for Bicillin
recommendation
BOARD ACTION REQUESTED:
Approval for Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to be used for the purpose of entering into an agreement with partnering organizations in which the Genesee County Health Department will provide the partnering organization with Bicillin.
BACKGROUND:
Local Health Department STI Clinics may provide clinicians in their jurisdiction Benzathine penicillin G (Bicillin) for the treatment of syphilitic infections to administer to their uninsured and underinsured patients and their sex partners per the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) cooperative agreement.
DISCUSSION:
Many clinical service providers are not able to administer the recommended treatment for syphilis. With this MOU, GCHD will be able to dispense Billicin to clinicians within Genesee County to ensure timely and proper treatment to those that have a syphilitic infection and to their sex partners. Treatment will not only prevent further progression of the disease, but treatment will also prevent the spread of syphilis to others. GCHD will comply with CDC Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) 340B requirements and medication dispensed will be tracked on the clinic's STD 340B Medication Log. GCHD STI program will continue to work with our Disease Intervention Specialist (DIS) when treatment is being coordinated with an outside provider to ensure that treatment is being noted in the Michigan Disease Surveillance System (MDSS) record. No county appropriation is needed.

No impact of Human Resources.
