BOARD ACTION REQUESTED:
Approval to host a Military and Veterans Gala for Genesee County Veterans/Currently Serving Members in November 2026
BACKGROUND:
Military Balls are formal, tradition rich galas dating back to the late 19th century-with roots in George Washington's era-designed to boost morale, honor service heritage, and foster camaraderie. Key traditions include the POW/MIA table ceremony, receiving line, sword arch, and formal toasts. With America 250 being this year, this is a perfect way to honor veterans in Genesee County.
DISCUSSION:
On Veterans Day, many businesses offer free meals to veterans. While these gestures are appreciated, we believe there is an opportunity to create an even more meaningful way to honor our veterans. Veterans should be celebrated and respected for their service and dedication to our country. The idea for the Genesee County Military and Veterans Gala, was born from the desire to provide a platform for businesses to genuinely engage with and support the veteran community. We believe that by coming together, we can offer veterans a truly memorable and honorable experience.
IMPACT ON HUMAN RESOURCES:
None.
IMPACT ON BUDGET:
We have funds budgeted under 2930-689.00-900.005 Community Relations. However, we would invite businesses that supports veterans to join us in raising funds for the event. The vision is for the Veterans Gala to be the 'Oscars' of the veteran community, an event so significant that it is televised and presented to the civilian population. Companies and other entities can donate to receive sponsorship opportunities, such as their logos displayed on a 'Red Carpet' affair.
