RE: Acceptance of Crime Victims Services Grant
recommendation
BOARD ACTION REQUESTED:
Authorization to accept an annual grant from MDHHS for Crime Victims Services for FY2024 in the amount of $408,595.00.
BACKGROUND:
The Prosecutor's Office is mandated under the Crime Victim Rights Act, P.A. 87 of 1985 and Article 1, Section 24 of the Michigan Constitution to provide victims of crimes with certain services and advocacy in the criminal justice system. To help meet our responsibilities in this area, the Prosecutor's Office receives a Crime Victim Rights grant award allocation from the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) to help pay for salaries and fringe benefits for two victim advocates and a secretary.
DISCUSSION:
This grant is an annual award from the State that is a significant source of funds for our budget.
IMPACT ON HUMAN RESOURCES:
No change in the current staffing structure.
IMPACT ON BUDGET:
The award allocation for FY2024 is $408,595 which includes $375,000 for salaries and fringes, $19,000 in ancillary funds for direct victim services (e.g., bus fare to court, lunch money during long court sessions, parking, childcare and pet care as needed, etc.), over $12,000 for supplies and materials, and almost $3,000 for Central Service Allocation. This funding helps pay for two victim advocates, a secretary and almost half of a supervisor. The remaining staff in our crime victims' services division are covered by other grant funding. There are no matching funds required for this grant.
IMPACT ON FACILITIES:
None.
IMPACT ON TECHNOLOGY:
None.
IMPACT ON INDIRECT COSTS:
None.
IMPACT ON OTHER COUNTY DEPARTMENTS OR OUTSIDE AGENCIES:
As with all grants, there is the indirect impact on Fiscal Services with regards to filing reports and processing funding reimbursements.
