BOARD ACTION REQUESTED:
To authorize and approve a Purchase Order for FY26/27 to IDEXX Laboratories in the amount of $50,000.00 to provide testing supplies and diagnose laboratory results.
BACKGROUND:
Genesee County Animal Care tests the stray population upon intake into the shelter to diagnose the welfare of the animal’s health and to decrease the infectious diseases carried in the animal population of Genesee County. Idexx provides testing equipment and lab results for said diagnoses.
DISCUSSION:
When infectious diseases and health concerns are undiagnosed, it can lead to detrimental outcomes for the welfare of the animal, the shelter and community. One animal that is infected with Parvovirus can kill any animal it comes in contact with. Heartworms, FELV/FIV for cats and kidney disease are all concerns within our intake animals that require diagnosing and proper treatment. Early detection is key. Another aspect of services Animal Care provides is to perform confirmation and supporting documentation to aid in the determination of criminal cases proving neglect for prosecution. Idexx provides results to aid in this need.

Said expenditure funds are available within the approved FY26/27 budget and can be taken from Animal Care GL# 2130.430.00.801.004.
