RE: Social Service Worker - Mental Health Court Advocate

BOARD ACTION REQUESTED:
The Genesee County Probate Court and Specialty Courts Office is respectfully requesting approval to create a part-time mental health court advocate position. This position will be under the direction and supervision of the Specialty Courts Director. The position is fully funded by the Michigan Mental Health Court Grant Program and does not require a county match.

DISCUSSION:
The mental health court advocate is necessary to identify and screen potential program participants in the Genesee County Jail and community who may be eligible for the mental health court program, among other duties for the program.

CONFORMITY TO COUNTY PRIORITIES:
The mental health court is an important program to divert individuals who suffer from mental illness from the criminal justice system into a specialty court to focus on recovery and stability. This furthers the county's values of improving the community and quality of life of its residents.
